Papers of the Thompson family [manuscript], 1860-1928.

The collection contains correspondence, manuscripts and financial papers of John P. Thompson, Sr., his wife Neilia Cave Thompson, their son John P. Thompson, Jr., and his wife Florence Kempter Thompson. Correspondence discusses the postbellum political activities of John P. Thompson, Sr., in Kentucky; the business ventures of John P. Thompson, Jr., in San Francisco, Calif., New York, N.Y., and "Walnut Hills," Orange County, Va., particularly his efforts to expand his home into a summer resort and to raise bulls and steers. There are many letters contrasting life in New York with life in rural Virginia and its memories of the Lost Cause. Frederick Dent Grant is mentioned. The collection also contains memoranda books recording letters mailed and attendance at local dances; recollections by Neilia Cave Thompson about life in Civil War, Va., several unsigned stories and a few political anecdotes. Financial papers, 1860-1918, concern John P. Thompson, Jr.'s business transactions, particularly at "Walnut Hills." There are also guest lists, drafts of descriptive brochures, and information on his bulls. The printed material, 1898-1928, consists of advertisements for farm machinery and fashions, medical periodicals, and postcards and brochures on "Walnut Hills." There are also some unidentified photographs.
